Madison teachers get Foundation grants
Saturday, May 25, 2013 5:00 AM
The Madison Consolidated Schools Education Foundation grants were recently announced.
Eric Phagan, fine arts teacher for Madison Consolidated High School, was awarded $300 for his brass pouring project. Brass pouring has students make molds of sculptures and then reproduce them in bronze or iron. Students then were able to pour brass in sand molds of sculptures produced in class.
Nicole LeGrand, music specialist at E. O. Muncie Elementary School, won $429 for her project that taught beginning string instruments to elementary students using ukuleles. It also provided enhanced study of the Polynesian culture in music classes.
Grants are awarded to individuals or groups of teachers for curriculum that "extend beyond" the basic curriculum, a press release said. Grants are awarded twice a year.
Funding for the grants come through donations from individual and corporate sponsors and an endowment from the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County.
