Downtown gears up for Fourth Friday and annual summer sidewalk sale
Thursday, July 25, 2013 11:00 AM
Madison will get a double dose of festivities this weekend with the Fourth Friday and Slice of Savings Summer Sidewalk Sale.
Whitney Wyatt, the Madison Main Street program director, said the two events typically are on different weekends but just happened to coincide this year.
The Slice of Life Savings was originally developed by the Madison Business and Professional Association, which has since been consolidated with the Main Street program. It started as a means to create an outdoor shopping experience on Main Street.
Wyatt said the goal is to bring more people downtown and give them an incentive to shop at the downtown merchants.
Merchants will be putting out their summer inventory and many stores will have special sales for the weekend, she said.
"It's basically geared toward promoting the downtown shopping district," Wyatt said.
The outdoor sales begin today and will run through Saturday. Wyatt said several businesses will provide free lemonade. The trolley will also be providing free rides from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The in-store events include:
Little Golden Fox: Fantastic finds and craft-made items on sale
Galena Garlic: Enjoy a pairing called "Herb de Lemon," which features a lemon balsamic vinegar with herb de provence olive oil. Also enjoy a lemon dill and lemon herb dip.
Art on Main: Enjoy the "Art in the Alley" outdoor exhibit to see work down by local and regional artists. Some artists will be at the show. Runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday. The Paint the Bridge display will also be shown for its last weekend.
Freckled Firefly: 20 percent off spring/summer flags, candles and select in-store items.
All Good Things Soaps: Random drawing to win three $25 gift baskets. Also, anyone who mentions the Sidewalk Sale will receive a free sample of Lemongrass Sage soap.
Village Lights Bookstore: Hardcover and paperback fiction books on sale. Ginger lemon iced tea and iced lemon cookies will be available.
Gallery 115: Wines from Madison Vineyards and soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts from the Gallery Cafe will be available.
Fine Threads: Up to 75 percent off summer merchandise.
Madison Buy Design: Many artisan items on sale. Some sales will provide 10 to 20 percent off on some items.
West Street Art Center: Will be hosting a show called "Abstracting the Human Form," displaying the drawings, paintings and abstract sculptures of Geoff Crowe.
Madison Apothecary: Beer tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday. Cost is $10 and a beer glass is included. Select beers will also be discounted.
Also during the Sidewalk Sale will be Fourth Friday. This month's event will be a downtown night out, featuring the sidewalk sale and musicians located throughout the downtown area.
Dave Dwyer will be performing at Galena Garlic. The Chestnuts will perform in the Main Street parking lot. Drew Geerts will be performing at Madison Coffee and Tea.
Kriss Luckett and Greg Ziesemer will perform at Gallery 115. Stan Attenberger will perform at Madison Buy Design.
John Sheckler will perform at Something Simple. Charlie Schnabel will perform at Fine Threads. Craze will perform at the First Baptist Church on Broadway.
