Harlem Wizards coming to Carrollton
Thursday, April 13, 2017 3:03 PM
Carroll County High School will host the Harlem Wizards basketball team later this month for a community fundraiser.
The show team will play a team of local community members from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at the school.
Funds raised by ticket and merchandise sales will support Carroll County Schools’ Family Ties Resource Center. The center is supported by a state grant based on the number of students eligible for free schools lunches, however, all students at Kathryn Winn Primary, Cartmell Elementary and Head Start may receive services.
The center was established through the Kentucky Education Reform Act and is intended to “create a bridge between schools, community and family.” Families can connect with community agencies providing a variety of services through the center.
The Harlem Wizards were established in 1962 by Howie Davis who wanted to create a basketball show to rival the Harlem Globetrotters. Davis’ initial team featured Goose Tatum, an original Globetrotters member.
Since then, the team has included more than 25 former NBA players and have toured most of the United States and other countries including China, Italy and Brazil.
During the event, the Wizards will take on the Carroll County Crushers, a team made of up teachers, administrators and other community members.
The team, coached by Paul Stone and Julie Aulbach, will include: Leah Spencer, Jonica Ray, Jacklyn Fink, Dana Oak, Will Yager, Jacob Evans, Crystal Trimble, Laman Stark, Bill Osborne, Greg Goff, Marc Mumphrey, Robb Adams, Mark Willhoite, Dave Roberts, Chad Franklin, Jeannie Rohrer, Rachel Scalf, Lynn Eaglin, Aimee Roos, Gail Becraft, Cheryl Grace and Tiffany Weaver.
Tickets may be purchased in advance for $7 or for $10 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Family Ties Resource Center, Cartmell Elementary School and Kathryn Winn Primary School. Tickets also can be ordered online at https://harlemwizards.thundertix.com/events/101803.
