Several dozen artwork pieces on display for an annual show at the Art on Main gallery have two things in common - the canvas size and price.

The second annual Square Deal art show features the creative works of more than 50 local and regional artists through the end of the year. Madison Art Club Vice President Bob Saueressig said artists received a 12-inch-square canvas for a small entry fee but used their own choice of themes and media to create the pieces.

"There was no theme for this show," Saueressig said. "It's kind of a fun thing to do."

The idea for the art show came from another gallery in North Dakota, Saueressig said. He had worked with the gallery on a show and saw the idea during a visit. Saueressig brought the idea for the show back to Madison, where the first show had success last year.

Several artists chose to create works again for the second annual show, while artists new to the show decided to submit work for the first time after hearing about the Square Deal idea.

The Square Deal art pieces at the gallery at 309 W. Main St. feature a variety of watercolors, oil, pastels or acrylics. The displayed works vary from collages and three-dimensional works to winter scenes and other local landscapes.

The Square Deal pieces, located in the front of the gallery, feature the works of several local and regional artists. Some of the artists participating in the show include Saueressig, Bill Borden, Stan Attenberger, Patty Wells Smith, Cynthia LeBre and Ray Hassard.

Saueressig said the Square Deal show gives collectors and buyers a chance to purchase well-known local and regional artists' work at a decent price. All of the 12-inch-square canvasses will be priced at $99 each.

Artists will hold an opening reception for the Square Deal Art Show from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 15 during the "Christmas in Madison" open house event. Square Deal art pieces are on display and on sale now, Saueressig said, but the gallery asks that works purchased before the opening reception remain on display through the Nov. 15 event.

The art club also will be selling artwork created on 3-inch-square canvasses for $20. The small canvasses, which can be used as holiday ornaments, will be displayed on a special Christmas tree in the gallery.

Art on Main gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with hours of noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The gallery may be open by chance on Wednesdays. The gallery also hosts extended hours during Fourth Fridays and other special events each month.
