Madison's Second Annual Organ Crawl on Saturday will highlight three of the largest electric pipe organs in Jefferson County and will allow patrons time to take a turn playing the instruments.
This year's program will be divided into three, 30-minute sessions - listen, learn and play. The event starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m.
Organist Starla Raley, Linda Roaks and Jonathan Stanley will give brief lectures on the organs and then demonstrate the instrument, playing works by John Philip Souza, Dan Locklair and Johann Sebastian Bach.
The crawl will begin at Madison Presbyterian Church, 202 Broadway, then travel to the First Christian Church, 512 W. Main St., and will finish at Trinity United Methodist Church, 412 W. Main St.
Raley is the organist at Christ Episcopal Church. She also teaches at Ivy Tech Community College and owns and operates Mulberry Music Studio in downtown Madison. Roaks is the music assistant at the First Baptist Church and is a retired elementary music teacher. Stanley is the organist and choir director at Madison Presbyterian and First Baptist Church.
Saturday's event is free to the public, but donations will be accepted.
Stanley said patrons are encouraged to bring along sheet music so they, too, can play the organs.
Last year's organ crawl, modeled from a similar program in Cincinnati, Ohio, focused on Madison's historic tracker-action, or mechanic, organs. Most of the electric organs to be featured this year were constructed in the 1980s or 1990s, but still use wind to generate sound from the pipes.
Stanley said there are about 10 pipe organs located throughout Hanover and Madison, with the three in this year's tour being some of the largest.
