The trees are blooming, the flowers are beginning to bud and the season's newest wines are ready for tasting.

Six area wineries on the Indiana Wine Trail will host Spring Into The Valley this weekend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Ertel Cellars Winery, Lanthier Winery, Madison Vineyards, Ridge Winery, Stream Cliff Farm Winery and Thomas Family Winery will put out their best and newest wines and a variety of breads and cheeses.

The tastings and appetizers are free during the event.

Madison Vineyards will offer appetizers as they present two new wines - a cabernet franc and noiret - to patrons.

Ridge Winery in Vevay will present Hawaiian, Mexican and spinach cheese dip, served with bread.

Thomas Family Winery will release two new wines - a seyval blanc and house white wine.

"They're both lots of fun," said owner Steve Thomas.

The downtown Madison winery also will offer artisan fruit-based and pepper-based cheeses from dairy farms in Wisconsin and southern Kentucky. One cheese will feature garam masala spice, which is an Indian treat.

Thomas said the event serves as the kickoff for the wine-tasting season, a time when patrons can get outside and enjoy the sights, sounds and flavors of spring.

"Most all of these places around, the wineries, have a lot to do with the outdoors. And it's important for people to get out an enjoy them. And that's what we're looking for people to do," Thomas said.
