An Indianapolis author and college professor will bring her novel about honor killings to Madison this weekend at a book signing event.

Laila Anwarzai Ayoubi, a former journalist and diplomat, will sign copies of “Niki’s Honor” from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Village Lights Bookstore.

Ayoubi, an associate professor at Martin University and former Butler University faculty member, grew up in Afghanistan and used her experience and knowledge of the area’s culture and customs as a foundation for the book.

“Niki’s Honor” tells the story of a young woman living in a Soviet occupied country and how her life is changed by an honor killing carried out by her family. While fictional, the story is based on the practice of family members killing one of their own – often women and girls – to protect the family from “dishonor.”

Along with a signing, Ayoubi will read selections from the book for attendees.
