An annual poetry event returns to Madison this weekend as poets from the tri-state area share their works during hourly readings and book signings.
Village Lights Bookstore will host Poetpalooza 2013: A Tri-State Poetry Summit beginning Friday, with events continuing on Saturday. The two-day event will feature several poets from throughout Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, as well as past and present poets laureate from Indiana and Kentucky.
Village Lights Bookstore owner Nathan Montoya noted some of the changes to this year's event.
"We decided to shorten it to two days this year," he said, yet the hours of the event have been extended to host nearly as many poets as last year.
The event will feature hourly readings and signings by 22 regionally and nationally recognized poets from the tri-state area including Madison poets Jack Ramey, Jill Kelly Koren and Kay Stokes. Each poet or group will take the stage at the top of the hour and present a 30- to 45-minute reading. After the readings, poets and groups will remain in the bookstore for questions and signing in the front of the shop during the other readings.
Indiana's current Poet Laureate Karen Kovacik plans a visit during Saturday's events, with past Indiana Poet Laureate Norbert Krapf hosting a book launch for "American Dreams" on Saturday as well. Past Kentucky Poets Laureate Maureen Morehead and Richard Taylor will also be at the bookstore during Saturday's events to present their works.
Poetpalooza 2013 will also feature the return of a group of Hoosier poets called the Reservoir Dogwoods on Saturday. The group offers their unique style of poetry and live performances during tours, as well as special events.
"The energy level was so high," Montoya said of their performance.
The Reservoir Dogwoods bring a "saucy blend of humor, drama, street smarts, literary acumen, homespun wisdom, worldly events, personal catharsis and bawdy pokes at the human condition," the group's website said. The group brings enthusiasm and poignancy to their performances throughout Indiana and surrounding states.
Live music will also be part of the two-day event with The Chestnuts performing Friday and Greg Ziesemer and Kriss Luckett performing on Saturday.
An open mic poetry slam will be hosted on Friday as well. Participants are asked to sign up for the event at the bookstore, 110 E. Main St., throughout the day of the event. Participants will have a time limit to read their own work, and awards for the slam will be given.
All of the events will be in a flow-through format, so visitors to Poetpalooza 2013 may stop by for one hour or one day of poetry readings.
