Carroll County Sheriff's deputy solves cold case
Thursday, February 07, 2013 10:00 AM
The Carroll County Sheriff's Office solved a theft case in January after checking on a vehicle taking up multiple parking spaces at a Carrollton business.
Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy J.T. Shaw saw a Snap-On Tools truck parked sideways in the Kroger parking lot while traveling on KY 227 on Jan. 11. He stopped to check the situation in anticipation of complaints from customers, a Carroll County Sheriff's Office release said.
Shaw asked the Snap-On salesman to explain the situation, and the salesman stated he was buying tools from a Bedford man, the release said. The Bedford man was identified by Shaw as David Garrett. Garrett, 28, and Justin Blankenship had been suspects in a November 2008 burglary at Cummings Towing & Recovery in Worthville. About $23,000 in tools were stolen during the burglary, the release said.
Shaw recognized the tools as possibly belonging to Cummings because the company uses similar colors matching the tools, the release said.
Garrett initially told Shaw he was given the tools by multiple people - including his girlfriend. The girlfriend, who was parked nearby, denied the accusation. Garrett then identified the tools belonging to Cummings, the release said.
Garrett was arrested on Jan. 11 for receiving stolen property under $10,000 based on his possession of the tools. The tools Garrett attempted to sell were valued at $2,400, the release said.
Shaw also interviewed Blankenship, who was fully cooperative. The investigation is still ongoing.
