With Halloween just a day away, it's only logical to start planning for Christmas. And that's exactly what the Madison Police Department is doing.

Applications for this year's Christmas With A Cop program will be available starting Friday. They will be available at the Madison Police Department or at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. The event itself will be held Dec. 16.

Patrolman Ricky Harris, one of the organizers of the event, said they have raised more than $5,000 for this year's event.

"We probably could accept 40 to 45 children," he said.

Last year, the program accepted 40 children and between 30 and 40 received gifts the previous year.

Fundraising efforts ran into a bit of a problem when the Christmas With a Cop Poker Run, the group's largest annual fundraiser, fell short due to rain. Harris said they only raised half of the money they expected to bring in.

Additional poker runs were organized by Midtown Motors, Tiffany's Lounge and the Crown Room, and brought in additional funding for the program.

"Their efforts through these motorcycle rides raised a total of nearly $5,000, including the first ride of the year which was mostly rained out," Harris said,

Anyone with questions about the event can contact Harris or Lt. Det. Jonathon Simpson at MPD at (812) 265-3347.

The event is sponsored by the local Fraternal Order of Police.
