Heavy evening rains provide problems on city, county roads
Courier Staff Report
Tuesday, July 02, 2013 11:00 AM
City and county crews are still working to clear roadways after responding to several overnight flash flooding events.
Heavy flooding was reported near the north and south portions of U.S. 421 and in the Chelsea area. The affected city areas include the intersection at Aulenbach Avenue and East Street, Moody Park Lane and at East and Fourth streets.
In the county, cleanup areas include Hanover-Saluda Road, Ten Cent Road, County Road 400-W, Camp Meeting Road and East Lemon Road.
On Monday, the National Weather Service in Louisville issued a flash flooding warning for all of Jefferson County and many surrounding counties. The Madison Courier weather station recorded 1.75 inches of rainfall Monday, nearly all of which came in the evening hours.
Street Superintendent Doug Vest said crews responded to flash flooding incidents in the downtown area at about 11 p.m. Monday. The cleanup efforts continued into this morning as crews are working to remove mud and debris that had been pushed on to roadways.
"It's well under control now," Vest said.
Darrell Gayle, county highway superintendent, said crews will spend today continuing to work on "wash outs" along Lemon and Camp Meeting roads, as well as County Road 400-W.
In addition to the overnight flooding, the National Weather Service is calling for possible thunderstorms for the next seven days.
The forecast, which includes Jefferson and Trimble counties, includes possible localized flooding from Thursday through Saturday.
