Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 58-year-old Madison man they say forced his way into a home near Skyline Drive and then attempted to steal a vehicle on Sunday night.
William R. Cooper faces preliminary charges of residential entry, theft, attempted auto theft, attempted burglary, attempted residential entry, unauthorized entry of motor vehicle and attempted unauthorized entry of motor vehicle, according to a sheriff's department news release.
Deputies received a call about a vehicle break-in at 8:56 p.m. After getting a description of the suspect from a homeowner, deputies Yancy Denning and Josh Cochran conducted a foot patrol of the area.
While patrolling, the deputies heard two men arguing nearby, one of whom matched the description of the suspect. The home owner at the second location said he discovered Cooper in his home and forced him out. At that point, he said Cooper attempted to steal his vehicle, the release said.
Cooper was arrested without incident and transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he awaits in initial hearing.
