Marilyn McQueen, past president and current member of Prevent Child Abuse of Jefferson County, speaks at a vigil to raise awareness about child abuse Tuesday night.

The Madison event was held in conjunction with statewide vigils organized by the Indiana Department of Child Services.

McQueen said that in addition to awareness, she also encourages more deliberate kindness in the everyday rhythm of people's lives.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Chad Lewis said that services were provided to more than 200 children in Jefferson County in response to reports of childhood abuse and neglect in 2013.

Lewis encouraged the community to take a more proactive approach to help. "Instead of only asking why law enforcement agencies and the public in general doesn't do more about child abuse and neglect, ask yourself, what can I do?" (Staff photo by Ken Ritchie/
