Madison couple Brittany Redd and Denney N. Reffett welcomed their first child - and the first baby of 2014 born in Jefferson County - just hours after ringing in the new year.
Clara Lynn Reffett was born at 8:13 a.m. on Wednesday at King's Daughters' Hospital. She weighs 6 pounds, 13 and one-half ounces and is 19 3/4 inches long.
Clara was the first of two babies born on New Year's Day at the hospital.
Clara's mother said the baby arrived a little earlier than expected - she wasn't due until Jan. 15.
Redd started going into labor around 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Reffett said. Clara was born more than 13 hours later.
Even though Clara was two weeks early, she's healthy and doing fine.
"(Wednesday) all she did was sleep," Redd said, noting Clara had been awake and eating a little more on Thursday.
Redd and Reffett were prepared as much as they could be, even though Clara made an appearance a little earlier than expected. The couple found out on Aug. 30 that they were expecting a girl.
They have had the baby's name picked out for about 3 months, Reffett said. Clara was named after Redd's great-aunt.
"I'm excited that she's the first baby born in the new year at the new hospital," Redd said.
Members of the Jefferson County Homemakers Club also visited the family to welcome Clara as the first baby born in the new year in Jefferson County. The club delivered a basket with a handcrafted quilt, bibs, diapers, clothes and other baby items.
