A Kentucky non-profit organization selected a Madison resident to serve a term on its board of directors.
Jarrett Boyd was elected in November to join the Friends of Kentucky Libraries Inc. Board of Directors. Boyd worked at the Carroll County Public Library and lived in Carrollton, Ky., for many years, but had recently decided to move to Madison.
"They said they still wanted me on the board," Boyd said. "I knew from my years in the library world several people on the board."
Boyd worked as the director of Carroll County Public Library from 1982 to 2008. During her time in Carroll County, she oversaw a major library renovation in Carroll County and helped to expand the community's use of the public library.
The Friends of Kentucky Libraries Inc. is a non-profit organization made up of individuals and local chapters who support and celebrate Kentucky's public libraries, the group's website said.
The group advocates for public libraries on local, state and federal levels and provides other support for formation and success of local Friends chapters. The non-profit organization formed in the 1950s and continued to be an active group for almost three decades. The group has reformed after a period of dormancy and continues to bring together people who recognize the positive influence of lifelong learning, intellectual curiosity and free access to information, a press release said.
Boyd worked with some of the members of the Friends of Kentucky Libraries Inc. throughout her career, although her new appointment to the Board of Directors will be her first time working directly with the group.
Other board members voted to fill a vacancy on the Board of Directors last month, Boyd said. Her name was mentioned by the members, and she was elected to the position.
Boyd's new appointment to the Board of Directors will continue to allow her to complete advocacy work for libraries throughout Kentucky, she said. She will attend her first meeting as a new board member on Dec. 11 in Frankfort, Ky.
"I look forward to the opportunity," Boyd said. "I think public libraries play such a vital role in the community."
