Two men face preliminary charges of possession of heroin and possession of paraphernalia after their arrest Thursday.
Dustin Cutshall, 22, of Hanover, and Zachary Morrison, 20, of Lexington, were traveling southbound on U.S. 421 when Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Brent Bennett observed their car speeding.
Bennett caught up with the white Toyota at the intersection of U.S. 421 and Milton Street. The car proceeded westbound on Milton Street when Bennett observed a wadded up piece of paper being tossed from the passenger window, according to a press release from Sheriff John Wallace.
Bennett retrieved the item thrown from the vehicle and continued to follow the car.
Inside the paper was a significant amount of heroin, the press release stated.
Bennett stopped the car on Sixth Street. After a search, officers found an additional amount of heroin and items consistent with the use of the narcotics, police said.
Cutshall and Morrison were taken into custody and are awaiting their initial court appearance.
Bennett was assisted by Madison Police Dept. Patrolman Jacob Schmidt.
