Craigslist ad leads to prostitution charges
Tuesday, January 15, 2013 10:00 AM
Police arrested a Madison woman Sunday on a charge of prostitution.
Police discovered an advertisement on Craigslist, a classified advertisement site, for a woman looking for sex in exchange for money, Police Chief Dan Thurston said.
Officers contacted Rachelle Stephens, 23, via email and text message to arrange a meeting at the Hillside Inn, police said. Stephens sent officers picture messages of her face, which helped officers identify her, Thurston said.
Officers agreed to provide $75 and painkillers in return for sex, according to the affidavit. Once Stephens agreed to the deal, officers placed her under arrest, the police report said.
Upon checking her phone, officers found the text messages that had been exchanged with her, Thurston said.
Stephens was taken to the Jefferson County Jail on a charge of prostitution, a Class A misdemeanor.
