A team of 11 Lydia Middleton Elementary School students took home the trophy for the 2012 Madison Consolidated Schools Intermediate Spell Bowl on Thursday night.

The school won the award last year as well. This year, the fourth- and fifth-graders scored 51 points out of the 56 possible. The E. O. Muncie Elementary School Blue Team came in second with 48 points, while the E. O. Muncie Elementary School White Team followed with 41. Deputy Elementary School scored 40 while Rykers' Ridge Elementary School earned 34.

Family members filled the gym at E. O. Muncie Elementary to watch students tackle tricky and commonly misspelled words like hysterical, exorbitant, kaleidoscope and Czechoslovakia. The competition included 12 perfect spellers, who all received medals for the achievement.

Spellers competed in eight seven-word rounds. The students had 20 seconds to write down the proper spelling of the word announced by LeAnne Eberts, Madison Consolidated High School teacher and Spell Bowl coach.

The students studied for about eight weeks from a list of 500 words.

The winning team included: Isaac Boone, Maddie Simms, Connor Steveley, Luka Chabukashvili, Sam Hall, Adonis Wells, Bella Marcum, Caroline Kirby, Jackson Bladen, Lydia Bladen and Hagen Friske.

The coaches were teachers Mary K. Dwyer and Diane Munier.
