Trash collection will be expanded for the upcoming weeks as the Street Department prepares for a greater volume of trash from the holidays.

Street Department Superintendent Doug Vest said workers will collect a larger amount of trash from now until Jan. 3. Trash will have to be bagged and tied up, and no large items, such as electronics, will be accepted.

Trash collection is on a slightly skewed schedule this week due to the Christmas holiday. It will be on the same schedule next week, as there will be no trash pick-up on Wednesday. Customers who normally have their trash picked up on Wednesday will have it picked up on Thursday next week.

Vest said the Street Department will also collect live Christmas trees. Residents must call the Street Department at (812) 265-8304 to give the address where the tree will be picked up. No artifical trees will be accepted.

Jan. 10 will be the last day for leaf pick-up, Vest said. In order to make sure a pile gets picked up, call the Street Department and let them know where to come, Vest said.

Crews are tentatively scheduled to perform leaf pick-up on Michigan Road from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 13. Weather permitting, the road will be closed during that time, Vest said.
