A judge has denied a convicted murderer's request to be released from prison early.

Raymond C. Lamb was convicted by a Jefferson County jury in 1974 and sentenced to life in prison. He was arrested two years earlier in Greenwood for raping and killing Kathryn Kauffman. The trial was moved to Jefferson County because of pre-trial publicity.

Special Judge Gregory Coy made the ruling based on the current law, which reads that if a prosecutor disagrees with the decision for an early release, the request must be denied.

Lamb has spent 40 years in prison for the murder.
