Angie Hatton lights memorial candles for children who have died from abuse or neglect. The candle lighting was part of the 2014 Prevent Child Abuse of Jefferson County awards reception at North United Methodist Church on Tuesday.

During the reception children were recognized for their participation in a county-wide poster contest and several adults were given Extreme Kindness Awards.

Honored were:

Kindergarten: Johnathan Ambrosio-Vilchis and Brylee Deuser of Pope John and Marley Stivers of Lydia Middleton; honorable mentions: Olivia Scroggins and Sofia Bentz of E. O. Muncie and Jocelyn Johnson of Southwestern.

First grade: Bodie Harson and Jasey Chapin of Rykers' Ridge and Alexia Moderau of Lydia Middleton; honorable mention: Sydney Amburgey of Deputy, Caleb Seals of Southwestern and Alex Kendall of Rykers' Ridge.
