The Salvation Army on Friday kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign, which will run until Dec. 24.

The local nonprofit organization hopes to raise $116,000 during the holiday season from the campaign, as well as the mail-appeal donations, to fund the Salvation Army's year-long programs.

All of the money collected from the Red Kettle Campaign will stay in Jefferson County, Salvation Army Lt. Matthew Phelps said.

The Red Kettle Campaign funds programs that include the food panty, financial assistance, a dental clinic, character building, spiritual counseling, and breakfast and dinner throughout the week.

"We serve over 14,000 meals a year," Phelps said.

Bell ringers will be at Jefferson County businesses, including JCPenney, Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Big Lots and the Dollar General stores. Bell ringers will also be at Walmart beginning on Black Friday, Nov. 23.

"Our normal times are about 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.," Phelps said. Bell ringers will usually be located at the stores Monday through Saturday.

The Red Kettle Campaign needs the help of the community for donations to make the campaign a success, Phelps said.

The Salvation Army also needs bell ringers.

"We do need volunteers," Phelps said.

People or groups willing to help as Red Kettle bell ringers for a couple of hours or more should contact Salvation Army volunteer coordinator Lisa White at 265-2157, ext. 30.
