Arrest made in foiled McDonald's burglary
Friday, February 01, 2013 10:00 AM
Madison police arrested a McDonald's employee who allegedly broke into the Clifty Drive restaurant while it was closed Tuesday morning and stole a safe.
Zachary Shaffer, 20, was arrested on a charge of burglary Thursday in connection to the break-in.
Chief Dan Thurston said police received several anonymous tips that Shaffer had been involved.
Two men stole a safe containing $15,000. The safe was found the same day near the dumpsters behind the restaurant with all the money still inside.
Police learned that Shaffer was in the community corrections program. Thurston said he took off his GPS ankle bracelet about 90 minutes before to the burglary.
Thurston said Shaffer's vehicle matched the description of the car seen leaving the scene on surveillance footage from McDonald's.
During interviews with police, Shaffer admitted he was involved in the burglary and that they had underestimated the weight of the safe, but were not coming back to pick it up, Thurston said.
Police are still trying to identify the other person involved in the burglary.
