Several Madison fire departments responded to a fire that destroyed a home Monday afternoon. Passing motorists and area residents called police dispatch to report smoke coming from the house at 2317 Lanier Drive around 1:27 p.m. Crews battled the blaze for about 30 minutes to get the fire under control, Madison Fire Chief Steve Horton said. Lanier Drive was closed to traffic for over an hour as crews worked at the scene. The cause of the blaze is unknown, Horton said, but an investigation is ongoing. According to records available through the Jefferson County Assessor's Office, the home is owned by Gerald and Sandra Thompson.
