Police arrested a Goshen man Thursday for driving under the influence of prescription medications during a Carroll County car crash that caused four people to be airlifted to area hospitals.

Donald Jefferies, 50, faces charges of driving while intoxicated and three counts of assault in the first degree after he told police he had taken an excess amount of prescription medications before an accident near KY 36 and Notch Lick Road on Feb. 26, a KSP release said. KSP Trooper Dave Roberts arrested Jefferies on a warrant a little more than a week after the accident.

According to a KSP investigation, Jefferies was traveling east on KY 36 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a vehicle driven by 37-year-old Stephen Wise of Carrollton.

Jefferies, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was taken to Carroll County Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to the University of Cincinnati hospital, a release said.

Stephen Wise and two passengers - 34-year-old Nicole Wise and a juvenile passenger - were airlifted to Louisville area hospitals after the accident.

According to a GoFundMe fundraising site set up for the Wise family, Stephen Wise remains in the University of Louisville hospital with several broken bones while Nicole Wise has been moved to a rehabilitation center for her injuries. The juvenile passenger has been released from the hospital.

Jefferies was taken to the Carroll County Detention Center in Carrollton following his arrest. He remains lodged on a $100,000 cash bond, KSP Post 5 spokesman Brad Arterburn said.
