Hanover artists featured in Hoosier Salon exhibit
Thursday, August 22, 2013 11:00 AM
Two Hanover artists are among the 114 artists whose works were selected for the statewide Hoosier Salon 89th Annual Exhibition. Area artists included in this year's juried exhibit are:
William Borden, who has two watercolors on display, "Easy Street Sidewalk" and "Blythe Hall" and,
Lawrence Rudolech for an oil painting "Desert Flowers."
The exhibition is at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center at 450 W. Ohio St. in Indianapolis and runs through Sept. 28.
To enter the competition an artist must be a current resident or have lived in Indiana for at least one year and be a Hoosier Salon member.
The show is open to the public during regular museum hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $7 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, and $5 for youth ages 5 to 17.
The juried exhibition showcases 138 artworks, including oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, sculptures and other art forms. Nearly 500 pieces were submitted for this year's annual exhibition.
At the close of the exhibition, selected works will go on tour throughout the state.
The Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition is the state's oldest art competition. The first Hoosier Salon exhibition opened was in 1925 at Marshall Field's and Company Galleries in Chicago. A group called Daughters of Indiana created the exhibition as a way to prove that Indiana artists deserved national recognition.
Artists in the inaugural exhibition included T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, Eugene Savage and William Forsyth. The exhibition has continued every year since then, moving to Indianapolis in 1941.
