Connie Leap (top, second from right) gives Ariadin Vest, from left, Savanna Goodwin and Jessie Stuart instructions on how they and other girls from Girls Inc. should fill backpacks for the Stand Down project. The girls filled 100 red backpacks with blankets, socks, toiletries, first-aid kits and food items. Stand Down is organized by the Southern Indiana Military Support Network. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at the Nachand Field House, 601 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville. The event, for service members, veterans and their families with an emphasis on homeless veterans and veterans in need, will provide the backpacks as well as provide free hair cuts, health screenings, counseling, resume-writing assistance, VA and Social Security benefit counseling, and more. The Jefferson County Red Cross is also participating in the event. Bottom, Bella Marcum places food items in a backpack. (Staff photos by Ken Ritchiefirstname.lastname@example.org)
