Human Relations Commission plans Black History events
Saturday, January 19, 2013 3:58 AM
Madison's Human Relations Commission is sponsoring two events for Black History Month in February.
The group will host "A Taste of Soul" at the African Methodist Episcopal Church, 309 E. Fifth St., at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24. The event will include a sampling of freshly prepared soul foods and a talk from Sue Livers about soul food's place in African American culture.
There will also be a short talk about Madison's role in the Underground Railroad.
The commission will also sponsor a viewing of "The Help" at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the auditorium of the Jefferson County Public Library, Madison branch.
The movie, based on the book of the same name, is a story about black domestic workers during a time of segregation.
Following the conclusion of the film, a local book club will lead a discussion about the movie and book.
The discussion is open to the public.
