The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department arrested a man Tuesday after he allegedly struck another man and then hid from officers in a field.
Officers were dispatched to the 3300 block of Riverbirch Drive shortly before 6 p.m. in reference to an assault.
Sheriff John Wallace said Jonathon Gates, 29, Madison, hit a man in the mouth and face and fled to a nearby field. The man who had been hit was taken to King's Daughters' Hospital while officers attempted to apprehend Gates.
"Gates taunted officers to catch him and at one point indicated he was armed with a gun," Wallace said in a news release. Officers, with the assistance of a Madison Police Department K-9, were able to apprehend Gates.
Wallace said Gates continued to resist officers and Tasers were used.
Gates was arrested on charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class B felony; residential entry, a Class D felony; two counts of resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor.
He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail. The sheriff's department was assisted at the scene by the Madison Police Department, Hanover Police Department and Indiana State Police.
