Billy Chatham, Terry Keller and Steve Heitz, left to right, show off the city's new 2012 Freightliner Heil garbage truck, which the three began using on their route Monday. The new truck, which cost $129,695, replaced a 1997 truck, which had been in need of an engine rebuild. According to Street Department Superintendent Doug Vest, the expected life span on a garbage truck is eight to 10 years. The new truck is one of two used by the city each day. Madison's other garbage truck is a 2001 model. Street Department Supervisor Ken Washer said the new truck uses new engine and exhaust technologies that will provide improved fuel efficiency and cleaner emissions than the 16-year-old truck that it replaced.
