The Madison Board of Public Works approved a street closing for a section of Fourth Street.
The section, between Broadway and West Street, will be closed for a 30-day period while crews begin to demolish the interior of the former King's Daughters Hospital.
Updates will be given to the board after 30 days at which time it will be decided whether the closing should be extended.
Mayor Damon Welch said the project is "more than likely" going to last a year.
Board members praised the city's street crews for clearing Main Street for the Dec. 7 Very Merry Christmas Parade.
