Outsourcing sports might save city $58K
Financial analysis details revenue, expenses of city-run athletic programs

The Madison Parks Board received a report Wednesday night that said outsourcing city-run athletic programs might save more than $58,000.
The city requested Sherman, Barber & Mullikin to perform an analysis of the money spent by the Parks Department to determine if it would be cost-effective to outsource youth league sports.
The idea first came up in September when the board voted against turning over the youth basketball program to the Lide White Memorial Boys and Girls Club without seeing any financial information.
According to the report, which was presented to the board by Ben Foley with the Madison accounting firm, the city could save $58,579 by allowing another organization to run the volleyball, football, basketball, softball and baseball leagues.
Accountants looked at revenues and expenses from Sept. 1, 2011, to Aug. 31, 2012, for the analysis, Foley said. They determined the Parks Department generated $96,514 in revenue and had expenses of $155,093.
The biggest expense for the department is payroll, which makes up $72,343. Parks Director Dave Stucker said that includes scorekeepers, ticket takers and concession employees.
The proposed switch would eliminate the sports coordinator, because those duties would be performed by another agency. Referees are listed under their own section in the report because they are under contract.
Lide White offered only to take over the basketball program. That league cost the city $2,779 to operate, and it earned $1,203 in concession sales for the time period studied.
The only sport that turned a profit, according to the report, was volleyball, which brought in $5,550 in revenue and cost $1,806 to operate.
The board took no action after hearing the financial report. The board's next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 20.
