Brittany Dicus, a senior at Southwestern High School, has been selected to receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County's 2013 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

Dicus will receive full tuition to the Indiana College of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Dicus will be attending Ball State University pursuing a degree in nursing. She is the daughter of Linda Carol Kendall and Donald Wayne Dicus.

Dicus participates in Student Council, Principal's Council, FFA, archery, National Honor Society and is a member of the Honor Roll.

"The Lilly Scholarship is a highly prestigious award, and with all of the gifted and talented applicants that were also in the running, I am both honored and thrilled to receive this award," she said. "Being named the Lilly Scholar has given me the opportunity to further my education and become successful, an opportunity that would not have been obtainable without the scholarship."

Thirty Jefferson County students applied for the scholarship this year. After the Community Foundation Scholarship Committee selected one student, Dicus' application was submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for review and final approval.

ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree. There were 142 scholarships awarded statewide.
