Members of Madison’s Board of Public Works and Safety approved a road closing during a special meeting Wednesday for a St. Paddy’s Party activity on Friday.

Vaughn Drive between Jefferson and West streets will be closed from noon to 7 p.m. for road bowling, which will begin at 3 p.m. near Jefferson Street.

Steve Thomas, one of the event’s organizers, said the Irish game was often played years ago with cannonballs taken from the English. While groups now use a two-pound ball for the activity, teams of two still stick with the original idea of the game and attempt to move the ball from one point to another with the fewest tosses possible to win.

The event has been held in area alleys during previous years, but Thomas said organizers wanted to move the event to somewhere with a more scenic view, while still maintaining safety.
