Volunteers sought for bird count

The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge is looking for volunteers to take part in the annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count.
The goal of the bird count is for visitors to identify, count and record all birds seen during the day. Birdwatchers of all skill levels are invited to participate. Volunteers may sign up to count birds for a half day or a full day.
Two events will be held locally. The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge count will be held Saturday, Dec. 15. Anyone interested in participating in the Big Oaks count should contact the refuge at (812) 273-0783.
The Hanover-Madison count is Saturday, Dec. 29. Participants should meet at 8 a.m. at Clifty Falls Inn. For more information about the Hanover-Madison count, contact the Clifty Falls naturalist at (812) 273-0609.
Weather for the Christmas bird count can be variable, but warm and waterproof clothing is recommended.
Count results from 1900 to the present are available through the Audubon Society's at www.audubon.org/bird/cbc.
