Several Southwestern instrumental students won multiple medals during the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) solo and ensemble contests. The contests were held for instrumental as well as piano and vocals. Southwestern students competed in both the instrumental and piano competitions.

Students prepare a piece of music in the solo competition and then perform for a judge with piano accompaniment.

In the ensemble division, students work up a piece of music with a small group of students and perform for the judge. Each student earns either a gold, silver, bronze or participation award. It is possible for a student to earn multiple medals depending on the number of events that student has entered.

Shawe Memorial High School sent two students to compete in ISSMA. Caroline Wehne, a sophomore and senior Julia Wise. Wise plays violin and won gold in the competition.

Madison Consolidated High School students also participated in the event. Lucas Fisher, Mitch Marsh, Mitch Shaw and Seth Brawner all won gold. Matthew Sedam won silver.

Southwestern Winter Guard resumed competitive performances this school year for the first time in many years.

Competing in the winter guard activity helps the color guard to practice its skills and perform and compete over winter months.

The group competes in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association with groups from across Indiana.

The Winter Guard show is designed by Steven Satterfield with Molly Toomey as color guard coach. This year's show was performed to the song "Iscariot" by Walk the Moon.
