A Milton couple were arrested after police said they conned a man out of more than $200,000.
George Michael True, 33, and Angela M. True, 32, both of 173 Agin Way, were arrested on charges of theft by deception, more than $300, and theft by failure to make required disposition of property, more than $300. The couple were arrested Tuesday.
Kentucky State Police Detective Kevin Johnson said in his written report that Angela True, who works at Godfather's Adult Club in Louisville, met Donald "Carl" Powell earlier this year. Johnson said True promised Powell she would marry him and took money from him to buy True's mother's house in Florida.
However, Angela True was married to George Michael True at the time and there was no house in Clearwater, Fla., Johnson said.
In the search warrant, Johnson wrote that Angela True told Powell she was divorced and that she wanted to marry him. Because True told Powell she wanted to marry him, Powell divorced his wife to be with her.
Johnson said he listened to a phone conversation between Angela True and Powell about purchasing the house in Florida. She told Powell that they needed to wait on the proceeds from selling her house in Milton before buying their new home in Florida.
But, the house the Milton couple were living in was a rental property, and Angela True does not own any property in Trimble County, Johnson said.
Angela True also told Powell that George Michael True was her brother and not her husband. Angela True said George Michael True was living with her at the house they owned in Milton.
After reviewing financial records, Johnson said Powell showed he had withdrawn funds in excess of $200,000 and gave the money to Angela True. She insisted the money always be in cash. Powell gave Angela True $30,000 to buy a new KIA automobile. She also bought George Michael True a 2006 Honda motorcycle. The motorcycle was registered in his name, Johnson said. She was to use the rest of the money toward the purchase of the house.
Johnson obtained a search warrant signed by Trimble County District Court Judge Diana Wheeler to search the Milton couple's house on Agin Way. Inside the house, Johnson said he found $165,507 in cash and other documents connected to this case.
Johnson also searched the couple's safe deposit box at Farmers Bank of Milton. No specific items from the safe deposit box were listed as evidence in the court documents available at the Trimble County circuit clerk's office.
In addition to this complaint, Trimble County Sheriff Tim Coons told Johnson that he had received another complaint about Angela True promising to marry another man and taking money from that man under those pretenses. The Trimble County clerk's office confirmed Angela and George Michael True were still married.
George Michael True is the son of former Jefferson County, Ind., Sheriff George True and Peggy True.
George Michael True worked at the Jefferson County, Ind., Sheriff's Office as a jail officer but gave up law enforcement about six years ago. He was working on earning a commercial pilot's license, his mother said in 2002, and attended Vincennes University. According to recent court documents, George Michael True was working at North American Stainless in Ghent.
Angela and George Michael True will appear at 9 a.m. Sept. 9 in the 12th District Court in Trimble County.
