Kaboom ... Part Two
Second section of old bridge comes down
Friday, August 02, 2013 11:00 AM
The second in a series of explosions to demolish the old Madison-Milton Bridge took place Thursday. A 550-foot span on the Milton side of the river came down at about 9:15 a.m.
The next blast, yet to be scheduled, will take down the bridge section on the Madison side of the river. A fourth blast will take down the span in the center. It also has not been scheduled.
Bridge officials said Thursday that the sections of the old bridge directly over each pier will not be taken down in the blast. Those sections will be taken down with a crane to protect the piers from damage from the explosives.
Once the old bridge is removed, the piers will be widened at the caps and the new bridge superstructure will be slid into place. (Staff photo by Ken Ritchieemail@example.com)
