Kentucky man charged following high-speed chase
Thursday, May 09, 2013 11:00 AM
A Trimble County man has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer after swerving toward a Kentucky State Police trooper during a high-speed chase Wednesday.
Derek Snell, 19, of Bedford, led police on a chase through Indiana and Kentucky after Switzerland County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop him for driving recklessly.
Snell failed to stop for police, and deputies pursued the vehicle to the state line near Markland Dam, a Kentucky State Police news release said.
KSP troopers saw the vehicle at mile marker 55 on Interstate 71, the release said. Troopers tried to stop the vehicle again, but Snell continued to flee police.
Police tried to use spike strips in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but Snell swerved the vehicle toward the trooper. The trooper wasn't able to deploy the strips.
The pursuit continued into Boone County, Ky., before Snell hit two other vehicles at mile marker 182 after a nearly 25-mile chase on the interstate, Kentucky State Police Trooper Brad Arterburn said. No injuries were reported from the collision.
Snell was arrested on preliminary charges of attempted murder of a police officer, theft of a vehicle, fleeing and evading police, wanton endangerment, driving a vehicle while intoxicated, speeding, reckless driving, driving without insurance, no operator's license, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remains lodged at the Carroll County Detention Center.
Lt. Howard Rice is leading the investigation into the chase. Kentucky State Police Post 5 was assisted by troopers from Kentucky State Police Post 6 and the Boone County Sheriff's Office.
