Sarah Skiles


Sarah Louise Knight Skiles, 97, of Madison, formerly of Elkhart, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at River Terrace Health Campus.

She was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Knob Noster, Mo., to James Fletcher and Lena Grace Wampler Knight. She attended Woodland Grade School, a one-room school house. She was a 1937 graduate of LaMonte High School in LaMonte, Mo. where she was valedictorian. She was a homemaker. She lived in Rossville, Lafayette and Indianapolis. She moved to Elkhart in 1950 and lived there until moving to Madison in 2003. She was a member of Locust Grove Mennonite Church and the Olive Mennonite Church. After moving to Madison she attended Madison Mennonite Fellowship Church. She enjoyed sewing, puzzles, reading, cooking, baking angel food cakes and making noodles. She also enjoyed raising her children, teaching Bible school, spending time with her grandchildren, and taking care of her home.

She is survived by three sons, Marvin Daniel Skiles of Phoenix, Ariz., Melvin James Skiles of Ashville, N.C. and William Wayne Skiles of Madison; one daughter, Kathleen Kay Turner of Huntsville, Ala.; one sister, Marianna Patrick of Columbia, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John “Ezra” Skiles, whom she married Aug. 2, 1941, and who died in 2007; one infant daughter, Carolyn Skiles; her father; her mother; two brothers, James Knight, who died in 1992, and Don Knight, who died in 1999; one sister, Alice Rose Knight, who died in 1956; and one infant granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the service.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Olive Mennonite Church near Elkhart. Burial will be in the Olive Cemetery near Elkhart. Friends may call at the church Wednesday from 2 p.m. until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Madison Mennonite Fellowship Church or Olive Mennonite Church.
