Martha Johnson

Martha Johnson, 75, of Worthville, Ky., died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 26, 1937, in Anderson County, Ky., to William and Sara Marie Ward. She and her husband owned and operated Johnson's Grocery Store in Worthville, Ky., for many years. She also enjoyed farming. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two sons, Freddy Black and Bobby Black, both of Worthville, Ky.; one daughter, Martha Brown of Michigan; three stepsons, Dale Black of Nelson County, Ky., Richard Johnson of Worthville, Ky., and Charles Johnson of Bowling Green, Ky.; one stepdaughter, Sharon Dillard of Bowling Green, Ky.; two sisters, Rosie Dale Ward and Jo Ann Holt, both of Anderson County, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Johnson, who died Oct. 17, 2002; and her parents

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton, Ky. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery in Worthville, Ky.

Nellie Pickard

Nellie C. Skirvin Simpson Pickard, 84, of Vevay, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

She was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Carroll County, Ky., to Jacob G. "Jake" and Millie Jane Smith Skirvin. She was raised and attended school in Switzerland County. She was united in marriage Dec. 24, 1949, to Bob Simpson. She was later united in marriage to Arlie Paul Pickard. She retired as a stitcher with the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay after 43 years of service. She was a former employee at Kroger's in Indianapolis. She was a member of the Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 5396 and the Moose Chapter II in Indianapolis. She attended the Cedar Creek Community Church in Osgood. She resided for 10 years in Ft. Myers, Fla., and the past several years in Vevay. She enjoyed quilting and traveling.

She is survived by two sons, Mike Simpson of Madison and Donald Simpson of Aurora; one stepdaughter, Virginia Robbins of Avon; one brother, George Skirvin of Moorefield; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie Paul Pickard, who died in 1997; her parents; six brothers, Harry Skirvin, James Welby Skirvin, Leslie Skirvin, Rheuben Skirvin, Halley Skirvin and John F. Skirvin; two sisters, Stella Louise Tague Simpson and Margaret Beach; and one grandson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the service.
