Elizabeth Higdon, 91, of Madison, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at University Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
She was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Boonville, Ky., the daughter of Arch Barrett and Lucinda Lynch. She retired from Grote Manufacturing and then worked as an inserter for the Madison Courier. She was a member of Calvary Wesleyan Church. She was a member of the Garden Club and worked with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed traveling in the United States and overseas.
She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Lynn Carter of Hanover; five stepdaughters, Mary Ann Shepherd of Scottsburg, Bonnie Gates of Lexington, Faye Reed of Madison, Joyce Hoard of Scottsburg and Patty Bressler of Nabb; three stepsons, Joe Higdon of Deputy and Bill Higdon and James Higdon, both of Scottsburg; 12 step grandchildren; 12 step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernard Mathews; her second husband, Jessie A. Higdon; six sisters, Florie Gilbert, Rettie Coomer, Lori Campbell, Ollie Coomer, Louise Stockdale and an infant sister; five brothers, Chester Barrett, Robert Barrett, Willie Barrett, Oscar Barrett and Harrison Barrett; and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vail-Holt Funeral & Cremation Service. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Tiffany Lee Carter Scholarship Fund or the Calvary Wesleyan Church. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
