Paul Dowling

Paul H. Dowling, 70, of Milton, Ky., died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange, Ky.

He was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Jefferson County, the son of Kelso and Florence Stockdale Dowling.

He worked at the Charlestown Powder Plant, Marble Hill, the former Hamilton-Kittle Monuments and was the retired owner and operator of P.D. Excavating Inc. He was a member of Milton Wesleyan Church. He was a member of the Asphalt Angels Car Club. He enjoyed watching baseball and the Speed and History channels.

He is survived by one son, Greg Dowling of Bedford, Ky.; two daughters, Kathy L. Morris of Edgewater, Fla., and Lisa Stewart of Milton, Ky.; and one sister, Betty Conover, Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Bright Dowling, whom he married Sept. 30, 1962, and who died May 3, 2007; his parents; and two brothers, Dale Smith and Kenneth Sevier.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Milton Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Moffett Cemetery in Milton, Ky.

Friends may call at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from noon until the service Tuesday.

Anna Louise Freeman, 76, of Hanover, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at her residence.

Laverne Hostetler


Laverne Hostetler, 92, of Hanover, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

She was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Alfred and Virgie Smith Jenkins. She was a former employee of the Hilltop Animal Clinic. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and quilting. She also enjoyed Indiana University basketball and was a fan of Bobby Knight.

She is survived by one daughter, Patty Goforth of Jeffersonville; three sons, William E. Hostetler of New Washington, Larry R. Hostetler of Floyds Knob and Ronald K. Hostetler of Hanover; one sister, Agatha Patterson of Jeffersonville; one brother, William Jenkins of Dupont; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Hostetler, whom she married April 2, 1938, and who died March 19, 1980; one son, E. Leon Hostetler, who died Sept. 10, 2010; her parents; and one infant sister, Juanita Ann Jenkins.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grayson Funeral Home in Hanover. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in New Washington.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the service.

Richard S. King, 87, of Madison, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

Carolyn O'Neal


Carolyn O'Neal, 68, of Madison, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at her residence.

She was born March 30, 1944, in Owosso, Mich., the daughter of Paul and Lily Johnson Wilcox. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Carrollton, Ky. She collected movies and dolls.

Surviving are her husband, Elmer "Pete" O'Neal; three daughters, Teresa Bell of Louisville, Ky., Karen Conbest of Lexington, and Jennifer Chandler of Madison; one sister, Marilyn Kessler of South Carolina; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Shirley Wilcox.

Friends may call at the Lytle Funeral Chapel Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.

Virginia Rhodus


Virginia Davis Rhodus, 89, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Carrollton, Ky., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Episcopal Church Home in Louisville, Ky.

She was born Jan. 4, 1924, in Carrollton, Ky., the daughter of Euclid G. and Juliette Lindsey Davis. She retired as director of medical records for the Carroll County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Westport Road Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. She was also a member of the Women's Missionary Union.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Rhodus of Shelbyville, Ky. and James Rhodus of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, Terry L. Davis of Louisville, Ky.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank William Rhodus, who died Jan. 19, 1985; one son, William Gregory Rhodus, who died Jan. 10, 2002; her parents; and one brother, James Lindsey Davis.

A graveside service and burial will be at 3 p.m. today at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery of Carrollton, Ky.
