Henry N. Hinkle, 77, of Deputy, died Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.
He was born April 4, 1936, in Clay County, Ky., to Tom and Bessie Bennett Hinkle. He had resided in the Deputy community since 1954. He was employed for 36 years as a certified welding technician in Madison. He also worked for several years at Ford in North Vernon. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church near Deputy. He enjoyed playing music for the past 30 years, especially the guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano.
He is survived by one daughter, Karlynna Hinkle of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, John Hinkle of London, Ky. and William Hinkle of Delavan, Wisc.; one sister, Velma Kelm of Campbellsburg; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Campbell Hinkle, whom he married June 3, 1961, and who died Dec. 14, 2008; his parents; and five brothers, Thomas Hinkle, Robert Hinkle, Troy Hinkle, Oattis Hinkle and Ottis Hinkle.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church in Deputy. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery in Deputy.
Friends may call at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the church Friday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Billy Dan Martin
Billy Dan Martin, 57, of Madison, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at King's Daughters' Hospital.

Mary B. Pender-Shaffer, 82, of Madison, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Switzerland County, to John and Nora Cochran Buchanan. She retired from the Fiesta Restaurant after 23 years of service. She was an active member of the North Madison Baptist church. She enjoyed fishing and traveling to Florida, watching movies and cooking.
She is survived by two daughters, Anna Anderson and Cathy Abbott, both of Madison; two sons, Jack Fisher and Charles Pender, both of Madison; two sisters, Elizabeth Young of Madison and Gladys Evans of Vincennes; two brothers, William Buchanan of Madison and Johnny Buchanan of Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Pender, who died in Feb. 1979; her husband, Fred Shaffer; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Pender-Conrad; her parents; and two brothers, Harry Buchanan and Charles Buchanan.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Vail Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the service.

Shane Sample, 43, of Warsaw, Ky., died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 8, 1969, in Indiana, to Jerry Sample and Brenda Davis. He had many family connections to Madison and Switzerland County.
He is survived by one son, Aaron Cayton of Warsaw, Ky.; one daughter, Shaina Sample of Warsaw, Ky.; his mother; two brothers, Jerry Sample Jr. and Shawn Sample, both of Indiana; and one grandson.
He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Brendan Sample
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Church in Warsaw, Ky.

Laura Ruth Kinnard Scroggins, 89, of North Vernon, formerly of Madison, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at Jennings Healthcare Center in North Vernon.
She was born April 6, 1924, in Jefferson County, to Robert and Tressie Stearns Kidd. She retired as an attendant supervisor with Muscatatuck State Hospital. She was a member of Dupont Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Alice Brown of North Vernon; one son, Donald Kinnard of Centerville, Ohio; five step daughters, Debbie Righthouse, Donna McClanahan, Pamela Mount Castieu, Janet Conley and Catherine Stanley; two step sons, Larry Scroggins and Wallace Scroggins; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Kinnard; second husband, Wallace Scroggins; one son, Cecil Kinnard; her parents; and one brother, Fred Kidd.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lytle Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Bayless Cemetery.

Donald Junior Sooy, 81 of Madison, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at King's Daughters' Hospital.
He was born Dec. 19, 1931, in Madison, to Jesse and Opal Buchanan Sooy. He served in the Army's 79th Engineer Battalion during the Korean Conflict, earning several service medals and citations. He worked in the Sanitation Department for the City of Madison for more than 21 years. He also worked at Pearl Packing. He enjoyed fishing and good food. He also enjoyed watching old shows on television.
He is survived by one son, Marvin Sooy of Madison; one sister, Viola Hunter of Centerville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie F. Scott Sooy, whom he married Oct. 17, 1961, and who died March 7, 2007; his parents; two brothers, Ralph Sooy and Wayne Sooy; and one sister, Evelyn Bedwell.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Vail Funeral Chapel.
