Juanita Smith

Juanita Mae Centers Smith, 89, of Madison, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at The Waters of Clifty Falls.

She was born May 19, 1924, in Charleston, Ill., to Taylor and Tina Hobbs Centers. She spent her early childhood in Hazel Green, Ky. and Rogers, Ky. She moved to Indiana as a teenager. She was a homemaker. She worked early in life at the Charlestown Ammunition Powder Plant. She enjoyed sewing and crafting. She collected dolls and frog figurines. She also enjoyed hiking, the outdoors and listening to country music, especially Ernest Tubbs, Hank Williams Sr. and Loretta Lynn. She enjoyed vacations, camping with her husband, sister and brother-in-law and visiting places from her childhood in Kentucky. She was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed reading the Bible.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Sue Sullivan and Judy K. Cutshaw, both of Madison; two brothers, Scotty Centers and Clint Centers, both of Madison; three sisters, Betty Wright of Madison, Jewel Holland of Mt. Orab, Ohio and Wanda Burkhardt of Madison; three grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Smith, whom she married July 6, 1946, and who died Dec. 18, 1986; her parents; two sisters, Norma "Dean" Willoughby and Fay Brown; one brother, Ellis Centers; one half sister, Vada Thacker; and one half brother, Loney Centers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to a charity of the donor's choice. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Betty York

Betty Lou Baxter York, 83, of Madison, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at The Waters of Clifty Falls.

She was born May 9, 1930, in Cross Plains, to James and Geneva Harper Baxter. At the age of 22 she moved to the Madison State Hospital, where she resided for more than 50 years. She later moved from the hospital to a nursing home. Her biography, "The Monkey King and Betty Lou," was published in 2009.

She is survived by one granddaughter, Sandra Goodin of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirlene York McElhaney; and her parents.

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cross Plains Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Cross Plains Methodist Church Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church Friday from 11 a.m. until the service.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the family .Contributions can be made through the church or Wood-Oakley Funeral Home of Milton, Ky., which is in charge of arrangements.
