Samuel Montgomery

Samuel A. Montgomery, 92, of Nabb, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 at his residence.

He was born June 22, 1920, the son of Arley and Myra Weaver Montgomery. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Karen Siewert of Jeffersonville and Paula Stewart of Memphis; one son, Samuel Steve Montgomery of Nabb; one sister, Ruth Reed of New Washington; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Paynesville.

Grayson Funeral Home in New Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Cheryl Phillips

Cheryl Lynn Phillips, 62, of Madison, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012.

She was born April 11, 1950, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of to Thomas and Anna Bell Hall Shadwick. She graduated from East High School in 1968. She completed the nursing program at St. Luke's Hospital. Her husband worked in the oil and gas industry and the couple moved to several different cities before settling in Madison. She spent her time to raising and taking care of her family.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Steven Phillips, whom she married in 1971; two daughters, Holly Phillips of Overland Park, Kansas and Ashley Phillips of Madison; four siblings, Ellen F. Prather, Beverly Kulik, Shirley Thursby and Ronald Shadwick; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Neilly Lynn Hahn, who died in 2005; her parents; and one brother, Roland Shadwick.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service. Burial will be at a later date.

Chester F. Smith, 70, of Commiskey, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 at his residence.

Carroll Swanson

Carroll Frederick "Buddy" Swanson, 71, of Bennington, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the King's Daughters Hospital.

She was born May 28, 1941, in Switzerland County, the son of Henry Jonas Sr. and Helen Elizabeth White Swanson. He graduated from Patriot High School in 1959. He spent all of his life in Switzerland County. He was employed as a milk truck driver for his brother-in-law, Don Covington while Don was in the service. He retired after working 42 years at Envirex-Rexnord in Madison. After retirement, he enjoyed helping Eric Welch farming. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed watching Joel Osteen every Sunday. He also enjoyed fishing, farming and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Daisy May Scudder Swanson, whom he married June 30, 1961; two sons, Dana Swanson and Darren Swanson, both of Bennington; three sisters, Shirley Cook of East Enterprise, Ramona Bartlett of Plant City, Fla., and Sharon Harlow of Bear Branch; two brothers, Kenneth Swanson and Miles Swanson, both of Rising Sun; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry Swanson Jr. and Sandford Swanson; and one sister, Gloria Swanson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in New Liberty Cemetery in East Enterprise.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
