Chester F. "Chet" Smith, 70, of Commiskey, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 16, 1942, in Madison, the son of John Henry and Azailia Della Jordan Smith. He was raised in Dupont and Anderson. He was a 1960 graduate of Pendleton High School. He was married in 1961 to Donna Hempill. He was a bricklayer and was employed by the United Bricklayers Union Local No. 4 in Indianapolis for more than 40 years. He was later married to Waveleen Hobbs. After living and working in Indianapolis, he moved back to Jefferson County in 1979. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the demolition derby, playing cards, working in his barn and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Kentuckiana Cat Fisherman's Club and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two daughters, Lindra Smith of Anderson and Kim Birge of Dupont; two sons, Jimmy Joe Smith of Indianapolis and Scott Smith of North Vernon; one step son, Brian Updegraff of Deputy; one step daughter, Tami Stakelin of Madison; one sister, Karen Keller of Anderson; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Waveleen Hobbs Smith, who died Feb. 3, 2000; his parents; one brother, Gary Smith; one sister, Beverly Karr; and one grandson.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in Dupont Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. until the service.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the National Preservation and Wildlife Association. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.

Ruth Ralston Stegemiller, 91, of Greenwood, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 13, 1921, near Pleasant, the daughter of Jessie Carnine and Clarence Ralston. She was a 1939 graduate of Vevay High School. She was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, also known as the SPARS. She served from 1943 to 1946, working as a clerk at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C. She was a secretary for many years in the Perry Township schools, working at the front desk at Lincoln and Winchester Village elementary schools.
She is survived by seven children, Susan Hoffman of Greensburg, Mary Pendleton of Orlando, Fla., Ruthie Magary of Evansville, Lisa Peake of Alto, N.M., Priscilla Lawler of Chicago, Ill., Matt Stegemiller of Indianapolis and Andy Stegemiller of North Liberty; one sister, Mary Geyman; two brothers, Dillman Ralston and Earl Ralston; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Herbert Stegemiller, who died in 2005; her parents; and two brothers, Bruce Ralston and Lawrence Ralston.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center in Indianapolis. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Shriner's Hospital, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095.
