This time of year, Indiana and Kentucky basketball fans turn their attention to the high school and college tournaments. Emotions run high and the competition is first-class.

This year, there is another local team that deserves our attention. The Hanover College women's basketball team will be playing in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Play begins Friday in Holland, Mich. when the Panthers take on Ohio Northern, a highly ranked opponent in the Heartland Collegiate Conference.

Hanover (21-7) and Ohio Northern (26-1) did not play this season but have met the previous three years with Hanover winning all of the games.

Hanover earned its invitation to the tournament with a convincing 83-66 win over Transylvania on Sunday to win the conference's automatic bid.

The route to a national title will be a tough one. For starters, Hanover must get past Ohio Northern which has won 25 straight games. But as basketball fans know, anything can happen at tournament time.

Our community should embrace the Hanover College women's team as our hometown team. Let's give them the support they need and deserve.

Getting an invitation to the national tournament is a great accomplishment. Good luck, ladies.
