Many children in the Courierarea would benefit from having another caring adult in their lives.

Some parents - many of them single parents - need help providing quality time for their children.

That's why programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters are important. And, that's where you can help.

On April 26, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County will hold its annual Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser. This is the 17th year for the event. Proceeds will support mentoring programs provided by the organization.

This year's goal is to raise $55,000. It costs $1,000 a year to fund a match between a child and an adult mentor.

Studies have shown that there is a much better outlook for a child who receives mentoring from an adult through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

More than 40 local children are on a waiting list to be matched with an adult mentor in either the community-based or school-based programs.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is now recruiting event sponsors and teams to participate in the bowling event. Team members will be asked to solicit pledges, and prizes will be awarded for the top fundraising teams. Sponsors will help with the expense of putting on the event.

Bowl for Kids' Sake is a chance for community members to gather with friends, co-workers - even strangers - for a day of fun with the ultimate result helping children.

Form a team, support a team or just contribute to the cause however you can. Make a difference to our children.
