Madison has held the Arbor Day Foundation's "Tree City USA" designation since 1997. It is that time again when each of us can honor and celebrate that honor.

The Madison Tree Board again will celebrate Arbor Day with a free tree giveaway at the Madison Farmers Market at the Broadway Fountain at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

A variety of native trees will be offered. They come from the State Tree Nursery in Vallonia.

What better way to mark Arbor Day than by planting of a tree, making Madison a more beautiful and greener place to live for generations to come.

It takes more than being a pretty city to get the "Tree City USA" designation.

Trees are so much more than decoration. They help conserve energy year round... They produce oxygen and help clear the air... They invite all species of birds... They improve property values.

We should be proud of our inclusion in the Arbor Day program.

Pick up a tree and enjoy all it adds to property.
